Venereal diseases are always contracted through close physical contact with a diseased partner and these foremost affect the sexual organs, through which the contact is initiated. Medically, it is referred more commonly as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The different venereal diseases produce varied symptoms, but get transmitted through same route.
These are mostly caused by germs or viruses that thrive in moist, warm, inner body surfaces, majorily the mucous linings of rectum, sex organs and mouth. The sexual intercourse offers the most ideal conditions for these microbes to thrive in and get transmitted from diseased to non diseased partner, spreading the disease ahead. One can get infected with a number of venereal diseases at a particular time. The most dangerous and common venereal diseases in US are syphilis and gonorrhea.
Important Symptoms Of Various Venereal Diseases
One of the commonest bacterial infections of the genital tract is gonorrhea and the first symptoms appear normally after 2 to 10 days of infection. But, in a few cases, disease remains asymptomatic for months.
Major signs include painful bowel movements, burning sensation while urinating, anal itching, bloody, cloudy and thick discharge from the penis and swollen testicles.
Syphilis is another bacterial infection that affects the skin, genital and mucous membranes, but it can also spread to other parts like heart and brain. The symptoms of syphilis appear different in various stages. Congenital syphilis may also happen, where a pregnant woman passes syphilis disease to the unborn baby and the disease can be disabling and life threatening, hence, pregnant women need to be treated for the disease.
Primary Syphilis – symptom include painless sore on tongue, genitals, rectum or lips, enlarged lymph nodes.
Secondary Syphilis – rash appears marked by penny sized, reddish brown sores on any part of the body like soles, palms etc. Signs of discomfort, fever, fatigue and aching occur.
Latent Syphilis – no symptoms appear and the disease progress further without any signs.
Tertiary Syphilis – if syphilis disease is not treated, bacteria may spread further to internal organs causing damage or death. But these may happen after many years of initial infection.
Genital Warts Symptoms
Genital warts caused by HPV are amongst the common venereal diseases. The symptoms include several warts grouped in cauliflower shape, itching of genital areas, small – grey swellings in genital area and bleeding during intercourse.
These warts may appear on shaft of the scrotum, the penis and the anus. Genital warts can also form in throat or mouth of the person due to oral sex with infected individual.
Genital herpes is caused by HSV and is very contagious. HSV enters through small slits in the mucous membranes or skin. Symptoms are blisters, red bumps, and ulcers in the anal, genital or their adjacent areas. Itching or pain may also occur around buttocks, genitals and inner thighs. The ulcers may ooze out or bleed with disease progression.
Trichomoniasis vaginalis majorily infects the urinary tract of men, without any signs and symptoms. The symptoms appear later that may range from light irritation to major inflammation.
There could be abnormal discharge from penis, itching within the penis, painful urination and pain during intercourse.
