Important Stages Of Prostate Cancer
Stage 1 is the preliminary stage of the disease. In this stage certain tests are performed on the patient such as the needle biopsy test. This test is performed in males whose PSA level is lower than 10.
It is difficult to detect the cancer cells in this stage even through tests or images such as digital rectal exam.Cancer is found to be present only in one of the prostate lobes.
It is an advanced stage of the previous stage. Here the cancer does not spread but deteriorates. This stage is divided into stages IIA and IIB. In the stages IIA needle biopsy is performed on patients whose PSA level is lower than 20 but the Gleason score comes to 7. In this stage the prostate becomes large and a lump can be felt during rectal examination.
The cancerous cells are present inside and reside on one of the prostate lobes. In some cases rectal ultrasound is also performed on the patient. The main idea behind these tests is to detect the hard lumpy feeling of prostate cancer. Needle biopsy is also performed after the rectal examination. This could hurt a bit.
This is a serious stage of prostate cancer. In this stage the cancerous cells break down the cover of the prostate and spread outside the prostate. It can reach the seminal vesicles and the tubes that carry the sperms. In this stage is prostate can reach any level of PSA and the Gleason score is somewhere between 2 to 10. If the patient has reached this stage he requires immediate attention as there are high chances of the condition to turn fatal.
In some cases there can be situations where in the patient will have difficulty in urination also. As mentioned in the beginning the prostate cancerous cells can reach the seminal vesicles and affect the tubes through which the male body fluid or semen passes. If these tubes are infected by cancer the male become sterile in nature.
Stage 4 is the final stage of prostate cancer. In this stage the cancerous cells travel all the way to the rectum and liver. It also affects other body parts such as the lymph nodes, bones, and lungs. It breaks the capillaries of the prostate gland to reach other organs. Stage 4 is accompanied with severe discomfort and pain. The male faces severe problem in passing urine. The bowel movements are also affected at this stage.
