Prostate is a part of the male reproductive system and is located below the urinary bladder surrounding the urethra. Urethra is the tube that carries urine out of the body. The prostate gland helps in producing the fluid that combines with the sperm cells to increase their motility.
It is this fluid that comes out during ejaculation as semen. At the time of enlarged prostate, the gland grows bigger and presses against the walls of the urethra and urinary bladder causing urination problems.
The medical terms for enlarged prostate are benign prostatic hypertrophy and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, an enlarged prostate is not cancer and it also does not increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.
