It is understood that the mammography causes discomfiture and pain in you! However, if your doctor has advised you to take this test, you cannot probably avoid it, as though it may result in an unpleasant experience for you, it is for your welfare, as it will detect any malignancy in your breast(s), if present.
What is Mammography and Why Does It Cause Pain
Often, the pain in your breast may mislead you into making faulty guesses about its cause. You may think that some complication may have developed in your breast after your mammography. However, you should not worry, as the pain may not be due to a reason other than the medical procedure that you were subjected to.
Mammography is the procedure of detecting breast cancer by taking X-ray images of your breast, which are known as mammograms. The process requires capturing detailed images of your breast for analysis, for which, your breast has to be placed in positions that will help the radiologists capture its best images for their purpose.
This involves placing your breast horizontally on a metallic plate and pressing it with the help of another plate from the top. The pressure caused by the pressing of the X-ray equipment, results in pain and discomfiture in your breast.
Factors That Aggravate Breast Pain During or After Mammography
Mammography may not always be the culprit in causing breast pain in you, though it is the major cause of the pain in persons undergoing it. Other factors that contribute to aggravating the pain caused by mammography are the degree of tenderness of your breast, your breast size, and imminent menstruation.
Your breasts may be naturally tender, which makes them susceptible to increased pain and soreness when subjected to the mammography procedure. Mammography patients with larger and fuller breasts are expected to suffer from greater pain than their counterparts with smaller breasts, as large breasts have to endure greater pressure due to the pressing of the X-ray plates.
An imminent menstruation may cause tenderness and soreness in your breasts, which add to the general per-menstrual discomfiture. Holistically, this condition results in aggravation of your breast pain when you get the mammography done during this period. Your underarm may be stretched to an extent of causing pain and discomfiture in your breast, during the Mammography.
Ways to Alleviate Breast Pain Caused by Mammography
Here are some simple ways in which you could lessen the intensity of the pain that you experience during the mammogram. Reduce intake of coffee, as caffeine increases breast tenderness. You can schedule your appointment for mammography after your expected dates of menstruation.
You could also consult your doctor regarding the usage of pain killers. Do not wear any perfumes or deodorants as these may react with the X-ray apparatus and cause pain and/or discomfiture in you.
Though the hardships involved in the mammography procedure may discourage you from undergoing it, you need to be somewhat patient and cooperate with the doctors to allow them to continue with the procedure, to enable them to take the best mammograms of your breast, to help them arrive at accurate results regarding your breast health.
The pain caused by breast cancer is several times more than the pain caused by mammography. It is always wiser to bear a lesser degree of hardship in order to avoid the greater and dangerous one. Therefore, you should never avoid a mammography when your doctor suggests that you should get one done.
