There are more cases of low libido or lesser sex drive in women than men. It is a very common problem and studies have shown that a good proportion of female population shows lack of sex drive.
The general complaint is that these women fail to get orgasm, or simply they do not feel like having sex. The situation is generally temporary and need no real treatment. However, if the possible causes of low libido can be understood then attempts may be made to improve them.
So, what are the problems that pester the sex life of a woman?
Libido, especially in women, is the outcome of a complex synthesis of many factors. These can include the relationship, physical conditions, lifestyle and also traditional, social and religious beliefs, etc. and problems with any of them can lead to low libido.
Causes Of Low Libido In Women
Many women suffer from chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, neurological disorders, cancer, etc.
Apart from causing physical disturbances, these diseases can affect the mind and may ultimately lead to lower sexual drive. Anemia is also thought to be one of the causes, especially after the periods.
Medications and Surgery
Many prescription drugs can actually inhibit libido. Particularly the medications for depression and seizures can directly interfere with libido and in some cases remove it completely. Similarly, if the woman has undergone surgery of the breast or genital tract, then she may also suffer from low libido.
Alcoholism and Drug Abuse
Alcohol may be good up to a certain amount but after that they inhibit the sexual drive.
Drugs on the other hand are dangerous from the very beginning and apart from lowering libido, they can ultimately harm a person physically and mentally in the long run.
This is a factor that interferes with the sex life of both men and women. Overdoing any job can bring in exhaustion and affect the sexual performance of the person. In cases of women also, any job takes its toll. Even paying too much attention to one’s family needs can sometimes become taxing and bring fatigue and ultimately lower libido.
A woman’s body undergoes drastic changes all through her life and these can sometimes disturb the balance the sex life. Having a baby is undoubtedly a great experience for the mother. But it takes a heavy toll on the body and the hormonal changes and fatigue can lower libido.
Women entering the menopausal stage can sometimes feel lack of sexual drive for several causes ranging from lowering of estrogen level to vaginal dryness leading to painful sex. Lowering of testosterone also contributes to lowering of sexual urge.
Even if a woman is physically fit, she may not feel like having sex if she is mentally not ready. Factors like stress, self esteem, consciousness of one’s looks and status, memories of a disturbed past life and mental disorders can also affect the libido.
Sometimes, in spite of all the other factors remaining favorable, relationship issues can lower libido in a woman. So issues like lack of closeness to the partner, breach of trust, improper communication of the sexual needs and other factors that are causing disturbed relationship can directly affect the sex life of a woman.
