The penis is the main organ involved in the act of sexual intercourse. The whole process of reproduction also depends on this male organ. The penis also functions as the urinary outlet for men.
It is a very sensitive organ and needs to be treated with care and caution. The penis is basically a muscle which does not have any bones in it. But it does have dense muscles that resemble cartilage or soft bone.
To understand the different ways by which a penis can get injured, we need to understand the basic structure and composition of the organ first. The penis looks like a long shaft when it is erect.
There are two sponge-like pipes that exist on either side of the penis. When a man is sexually aroused, blood flow to these pipes is increased. This surge of blood makes these pipes absorb all the fluid and become engorged. This is what makes the penis hard and erect.
What Happens in a Penile Fracture?
If due to any reason the pipes along the shaft of the penis become over engorged or absorb fluid much too fast, a rupture may occur. Either the pipes or the outer skin of the penis may burst and bleed.
This will naturally be extremely painful and result in sudden collapse of the erect penis. Over the next few hours, the skin will start looking bruised and may turn a blue-black color.
Causes of a Penile Fracture
There are many different situations in which a man’s penis can be fractured. Here is a list of some of them.
Anal Sexual Intercourse
Anal sex is a risky way to have sex because it increases the risk of a penile injury. The penis tends to get twisted and turned during such an act. This can result in rupture of the penile pipes or even a muscle fracture.
Woman on Top Positions
This is another way of sex that can cause a penile fracture. The penis can get folded and pressed down in that position when a woman is on top.
The woman’s weight as well as the constant rocking motion can cause severe distress to the penile muscles. It is best to indulge in this position with care and in a gentle manner.
Masturbating vigorously is another common reason for this type of injury. Do not masturbate against a hard surface like a table or a wall. The penis can get severely injured due to the constant contact with such a surface.
Blunt force Trauma
A penile fracture can also occur through trauma caused by a blunt object or force. Turning suddenly while lying down (if the penis is erect) and wearing clothes roughly can also lead to this injury though it is quite a rare situation.
Treatment for Penile Fracture
There is only one way to remedy a penile fracture and that is a surgical procedure. The doctor will choose between rectification, partial penile removal and even complete penile removal depending on the severity of the case.
The patient will have to be hospitalized for a prescribed amount of time and will probably need painkiller medications as well as antibiotics. He will also have to avoid sexual intercourse and masturbation till the doctor says that the penis is completely healed.
