Ectopic pregnancy also known as tubal pregnancy is a medical condition in which the implantation of egg takes place in the fallopian tubes instead of the uterus. The fallopian tubes are narrow in nature and do not provide enough space for the fetus to grow. Hence, with advance in pregnancy the fallopian tubes may burst and even prove fatal for the mother’s life.
It is very difficult to know early on, if the pregnancy is normal or ectopic as the signs are similar in both cases. However, with advance in the pregnancy, signs of ectopic pregnancy become more pronounced. Below discussed are some of the important signs of ectopic pregnancy.
Important Signs Of Ectopic Pregnancy
Normal Pregnancy Signs
The early signs of ectopic pregnancy are exactly similar to that of a normal pregnancy. These signs include morning sickness, missed periods, general feeling of lethargy and weakness, increase in frequency of urination, tenderness of the breasts etc.
This is why it becomes very necessary to get oneself thoroughly examined by the gynecologist early on, so that the instances of ectopic pregnancy can be ruled out.

Spotting from the vagina sometimes occur in normal pregnancy as well due to other health related conditions. However, spotting or bleeding during pregnancy should not be taken lightly as it may indicate ectopic pregnancy.
Pain In The Abdomen
Pain in the abdomen is yet another sign of ectopic pregnancy. This pain may not be concentrated in the stomach region only but slowly may spread to the pelvic region also. A sudden shooting pain is experienced on one side of the pelvis which later spreads to the whole pelvic region.
The pain is mild to begin with and later turns acute . The abdominal pain may also be accompanied by cramps, similar to those experienced during menstrual cycle. The pain also tend to get worse with movement and straining.

A woman suffering from ectopic pregnancy may have great discomfort and pain during sexual intercourse. Even regular pelvic examination by the gynecologist may prove to be extremely painful.
Spotting may also be observed during intercourse or pelvic exam in an ectopic pregnancy. If a pregnant lady has these signs, she should immediately get it checked by her doctor.
Shoulder pain is also a very important sign that is exhibited by women having ectopic pregnancy. The ectopic pregnancy causes bleeding to occur internally in the abdomen under the diaphragm. This bleeding irritates the tissues of the diaphragm and subsequently pain is experienced in the shoulders. It is highly recommended to consult a doctor and not ignore if such a sign is experienced during pregnancy.
